Arup faced a major problem. He just could not sell insurance. Nobody seemed to want to buy from him. He wanted to quit. The daily humiliation was taking its toll. He worried incessantly about his future.
And then Arup met Mr. Sales. Now Mr. Sales was a superstar exceeding all sales targets in the company where Arup worked. He had developed a large network of agents and direct clients. A humble person, he was admired by everyone in the company.
"Help me", implored Arup. "I am in distress. I am on the verge of losing my job. What will happen to my old parents? How will I take care of them"?
Mr. Sales smiled kindly. He remembered his own past when he struggled to make his first sale.
Then he spoke," So you want to sell. For that you need to trust yourself completely. Do not harbour any negative thought. Cast away feelings of hopelessness. Study your products thoroughly. Practice your sales pitch before the mirror till it becomes a habit. Repeat till it becomes effortless. Prepare a list of questions which a prospect may ask. Prepare answers to these questions. Remember, sometimes there may be more than one answer to a single question. Follow the process diligently. Call 70-80 people everyday. Meet at least 8 -10 people everyday. Do not take rejection personally. Keep repeating the process. And do not give up. Look confident but not arrogant. When a prospect says no, ask the reasons. Sometimes people don't give the real reason. Try to get the real reason. Then attempt to clarify doubts. Seek help from seniors if need be. It might take time. A few weeks. Maybe a few months. But results will come. Slowly at first. And then rapidly. Serve your customers with zeal and efficiency".
Arup said," Sir, I am so thankful. You have made it so simple".
Mr. Sales laughed heartily. "It is simple, but simple does not mean it is easy. For example, everyone knows that daily exercise is beneficial but how many people actually do it. Simple to comprehend, not so easy to follow. Most things in life are simple. Follow the simple and direct path to your goal. It will not be easy but the rewards are worth it. And you will have lived a very fulsome life.
Arup was overwhelmed. Thanking Mr. Sales profusely, he swore he would do his utmost to rise in sales.
And so he did.
